Video War And Kashmir

Image
By Daanish Bin Nabi The surfacing of videos on social media in Kashmir showing the atrocities against the people is no good sign for the future of Kashmir. Such videos can only add further flames to the already deteriorated situation of Kashmir. Many political analysts believe that these videos are only surfacing to instill fear among the local populace in Kashmir. However, whosoever agency is releasing these videos on social media networking sites is forgetting the future repercussions it will have in Kashmir. On other hand, there are also videos showing how common people in two different videos try to rescue the CRPF troopers and in one another video some of the youth heckle a CRPF trooper. Adding fuel to fire Indian media kept broadcasting these videos during their prime time shows. It is not that they should not report or turn a blind eye, But two points need to be taken into consideration. First, the twist that the anchors give to these videos does not help the situati...

THE BATTLE FOR PARLIAMENT

Image
By Daanish Bin Nabi The gory civilian killings that occurred on April 09, 2017 in Budgam district will be remembered as one of the ill-fated days of the jinxed Kashmir dispute. The security situation in Kashmir is turning from bad to worse with each passing day and the most demoralising part of these killings is that New Delhi has turned a blind eye towards the killings in Kashmir.  Srinagar Parliamentary constituency that went to polls on April 09 – that had over 12 lakh voters – saw a minimal turnout of voters and the violence on that day is self-explanatory about how New Delhi is losing ground on Kashmir political turf. Many political pundits now compare the seven percent polling, a record lowest in past three decades, with five percent theory of Chief Minister Mehbooba suggesting the rage among the people against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The highest voter turnout for Srinagar constituency was witnessed in Kangan belt of ganderbal district which had b...

Verdict is out

Image
Daanish Bin Nabi The stage is set for the by-elections of Anantnag constituency, scheduled for April 12, where the contest is between the debutant and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s son, Tasaduq Muft,i and a seasoned politician, Ghulam Muhammad Mir, of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President (JKPCC). But before the poll bugle could be sounded in the eruptive South Kashmir, Kashmir stands on edge following the violence during Sunday’s polling. The fresh wave of violence in which at least eight people got killed on the poll day at the hands of government forces has put a conspicuous question mark not only on the outcome of April 12 but the overall changing political atmosphere in the state. The turnout on Sunday could not even cross the single digit with the recorded percentage at a little over 7 percent. If the vote is taken as the voice of the people, then people have clearly spoken, no matter how the pro-mainstream parties interpret it or how the me...

A Year On, Mehbooba Seems to be Reduced to a Political Minnow

A Year On, Mehbooba Seems to be Reduced to a Political Minnow Daanish Bin Nabi Today, an hour ago 0           On 2 April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s longest tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir. Soon after inaugurating the tunnel, the event turned into a mega show for the BJP, massively overshadowing its regional coalition partner – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Only two days later, on 4 April, Mehbooba Mufti completed her one year term in office as the first woman chief minister of the only Muslim majority state of the country with a right-wing party as her partner. However, the government neither came up with any advertisements about their accomplishments during the past year nor held a news conference to boast about the same. Violent clashes between the army personnel and stone-pelters have dented Mehbooba’s image in south Kashmir. (Photo: Rhythum Seth/  The Quint) W...

Kashmir Bypolls: Litmus Test for PDP in Mehbooba’s Home Turf Daanish Bin Nabi March 26, 2017, 10:23 am 0         Anantnag constituency in Kashmir, which is going for elections on 12 April, will see a contest between Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President (JKPCC) Ghulam Muhammad Mir and Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, cinematographer-turned-politician and son of PDP founder late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Tasaduq Mufti. South Kashmir, which was the hotbed of the 2016 unrest, is an important voter base for the PDP. In his first-ever election rally held last week at Dak Bungalow Anantnag, Tasaduq, in clear terms, warned his supporters not to  “risk their lives”,  sending a clear message to the people that the PDP has lost in its own bastion. Anger Against PDP in South Kashmir As the election heat rises in Srinagar, where the National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah...

House of Mirwaiz

Image
The first family of Kashmir Daanish Bin Nabi Kashmir has a number of religious institutions. One among them is the seat of Mirwaiz —which literally means head-preacher. In contemporary Islamic world this seat of “power” does not exist nor does it exercise so much influence as it does in Kashmir. This ‘Seat of Power’ is almost seven hundred years old and was recognized soon after the Muslim rule was established in Valley. There are no authentic sou rces during whose rule ‘ title Mirwaiz’ was officially introduced. Though many imminent contemporary Kashmiri historian are of the view that the title was introduced during Afghan regime. Conversely, the term Mirwaiz is not mentioned in Sir Walter Lawrence Classic, The Valley of Kashmir published in 1895, which is considered to be one of the authentic sources on modern Kashmir history. On other hand noted writer Zareef Ahmad Zareef says, “Ancestors of Mirwaiz travelled to Kashmir with caravan of Mir Syed Ali Hamadani (com...
